Each and every cat is unique, as any proud fur parent will tell you. But, even in a world of unique kitties, Sansa the cat (who's currently taking Instagram by storm) is a one-of-a-kind original. The heterochromatic beauty (meaning she has two different-colored eyes) is also a polydactyl with two extra "thumbs."
Sansa also suffers from feline hyperesthesia, a rare "rolling skin" syndrome. While not actually epilepsy, it is a type of seizure disorder that causes episodes of agitation and sometimes even self harm.
Which is why Sansa was abandoned at a shelter when she was just over a year old—and why she was in danger of languishing there forever. Until—miraculously—just the right purrson came along..
Karen has worked with special-needs children for the past 11 years, and was secretly hoping to find a special-needs kitty when she and her husband visited a Manhattan Petco adoption event 6 months ago.
"Sansa was the only cat who was hiding and whose face we couldn't see," Karen tells HiHomer. "Her write-up stated that she had recently been abandoned by the only family she had ever known, and was suffering from anxiety and heartbreak.
"Even though the other cats at the event were extremely friendly and affectionate and Sansa was the complete opposite, I really wanted to interact with her.I fell in love with her immediately."
Karen and her husband, Jack, took Sansa home that day.
Once she was knew she was secure and loved in her new forever family—and with the help of regular veterinary care—Sansa blossomed into the happy, confident cat she was always meant to be.
"She has really come out of her shell and become an extremely loving and social cat," Karen reports. "She sits on our lap on the couch every day, and sleeps on the bed with us every night. She seems to know whenever Jack or I aren't feeling well, and will stay right by our sides. She is the most caring and loving cat I've ever met!"
As for Sansa's hyperesthesia, Karen says, "Having feline hyperesthesia means that she has fits every day. She has good and bad days, but usually has at least one episode a day."
She adds, however, that medication has improved her condition. "She is currently on antidepressant medication which makes her fits less violent than before. Now that she's getting treatment, she's doing much better."
When asked what she loves most about Sansa, Karen can't stop gushing. "I love her huge personality. I love how unique she is with her gorgeous eyes and polydactyl paws. I love how playful and mischievous she is, just like any 'normal' cat. I love how confident she's become in such a short time, and how loving, social and vocal she is.
"I love how she wakes us up every morning (she's the best and most pleasant alarm clock!)," Karen concludes, "and how happy she acts whenever she greets us at the door when we come home. I love absolutely everything about her!"
