Today Minnow the cat is a handsome and healthy one-and-a-half-year-old. But what makes him so special isn't his beauty—it's how close he came to never seeing his first birthday.
Minnow was a tiny kitten in October of 2015 when he wandered onto the property of a lawn-care worker. The wee thing was clearly in desperate shape—weighing only 1 pound, 12 ounces at 5 months of age, he also suffered from parasites and major abscesses caused by an animal attack.
Fortunately for Minnow, the lawn-worker's client was rescuer Kara Dubrow of Feral Feline Friends of East Tennessee. She immediately took him in.
"He was on the verge of being septic," Kara recalls in an interview with HiHomer.com. "He was just a skeleton under all that pretty fur."
Veterinary care and lots of TLC provided immediate help for Minnow's most obvious maladies. Of more concern to Kara, however, was how severely underweight Minnow was—and how difficult he found it to keep food down or put weight on.
"We thought we were losing him a couple of times," Kara says. "The first couple of days, I kept checking to make sure he was still breathing."
Still, the kitten Kara describes as "the cutest, sweetest, puniest kitten the world has ever seen" had plenty of fighting spirit. "He is tough," Kara wrote in a Facebook post at the time, "and we will give him all that he needs to pull through."
Within a week, Minnow was showing encouraging signs of progress—finally keeping food down and even grooming on his own.
And, just six days after that, Kara posted this on Facebook:
"Hear ye, hear ye!! Special announcement of the most positive kind!!! Minnow has reached a HUGE milestone....He now weighs 2 pounds 1.1 ounce! In one short week, while fighting for his life, he has managed to gain from 1 lb 12 oz to 2 lbs 1.1 oz!!!!"
As the weeks went by, Minnow continued to grow and heal."Believe it or not, this boy made up for lost time," Kara sayAnd today, "He is full size and gorgeous!"
"He is sweet and playful, just a wonderful cat!" she adds.
It's no wonder that, once Minnow was well and strong enough, a lucky adopter fell in love with the beautiful miracle kitty and adopted him as her forever cat.
Still, the paw prints Minnow left on Kara Disbrow's heart won't fade anytime soon. "I can only speak as his foster," she says, "but he taught me never to give up."
